About me

I am a photographer who spends as much time as possible appreciating nature through the lens of my cameras. I used to concentrate on birds but have moved more into landscape and macro (anything smaller than a matchbox).

I have two young children and a very understanding wife and they allow me to indulge  as often as I can persuade them. I am lucky they are all interested in nature.

My philosophy is to enjoy nature. I apply the mantra:

take only photographs and leave only footprints.

I have been repeatedly disgusted by the behaviour of certain photographers in putting the picture ahead of the interests of the subject and this particularly applies to bird photography, with the massive ease of access to large lenses and good quality cameras, coupled with the technological communication making the pursuit of rare birds much more available.

EQUIPMENT

Remember that it is not the equipment that sees the picture but the person behind it, however there is no doubt that having the right equipment helps. The secret is to be carrying that piece of equipment, knowing how to use it and being always ready.

As a wildlife photographer you also need to know a little about the creatures you are going to photograph to hopefully anticipate them better and thereby increase the number of times that you are ready and therefore successful.

I use a variety of Canon gear and take all pictures digitally. These are then uploaded onto an external drive and catalogued using Adobe Lightroom. I also use this to initially develop the Raw files before final editing in Photoshop with cropping and adjustment to levels and saturation to make the shot as close to what I saw as I can. I try to get the shot as close to my vision in camera before taking the shot.
